Untitled (Ghost Listening Station) (2001)
Made for the exhibition Haunted Landscape at 1926 Exhibition Studies space, formerly Roger Browns home/ studio. Two microphones were placed in the backseat of Roger Brown's 1966 Ford Mustang housed in the garage. Telephone wire ran across the small courtyard and into the gallery where the car could be monitored on headphones. There is an idea in parapsychology that a traumatic event can be inscribed on a space and that ghosts are merely the playback of that event. In physics there is the principal of sympathetic vibration whereby vibrations from one object will be transferred through the air to another object with the same resonance. Understanding that all 1966 Mustangs would have the same resonance, it was determined that what the gallery goer heard would not just be the ghosts of traumatic events from Roger Brown's Mustang, but from the back seats of all 1966 Ford Mustangs everywhere.
